Create a Management Activity – Using the Polygon Feature
Overview
In this workflow, we will use a Tract feature to demonstrate the power of prescribing management activities to the perimeter of a polygon feature using the new dynamic segmentation tool. This tool allows you to prescribe to multiple segments along the same feature’s perimeter and allows you to dynamically shift the start and end points of each activity segment if needed. Let’s walk through this workflow to give you a better understanding of what I mean.

Using the Polygon Feature to Create a Management Activity
Step 1: In the Map View, select the tract feature you wish to prescribe to by single left-clicking on the feature using the selection tool. The selected feature highlights when selected properly.
Step 2: With the feature selected, right-click in the map view and select “Explore,” then “Prescribe Management” in the context menu. The Use Dynamic Segmentation? dialog window opens.
Step 3: In the Use Dynamic Segmentation dialog window, click <Yes> to using the new dynamic segmentation tools. The Define Segments window opens.
Step 4: Select the “Set Segment Length” slider and move it to highlight (in red) the length of the segment to be prescribed to.
Alternatively, left click in the “Segment Length” field and type the segment length value.
Note: In this example this is a multipart Tract polygon, therefore two rows are automatically added to the Segment list.
Step 5: Select the “Set Start Distance” slider and move it to the location along the line to be prescribed to.
Alternatively, left click in the “Start Distance” field and type the start distance value.
Step 6: To add an additional dynamic activity segment to the polygon that is highlighted, click the <Add Segment> button.
The new segment will automatically be added to the feature sketch beginning at the end point of the previous segment and ending at the endpoint of the feature.
Step 7: If you wish to discard the segments you have created, click the <Clear Segments> button. The Clear Segments dialog window opens. Click <Yes> to remove the segments you have defined or Click <No> to cancel the Clear Segment request.
Step 8: To reverse the start and end points of the original feature, check the “Reverse Start” checkbox.
Step 9: In the grid, check the checkbox in the “RX to Segment” field for the two segments that you created (leave the third box unchecked as we did not assign any segments to that polygon part).
Step 10: Click the <Prescribe> button, opening the New Activity window.
The Activity-Type-Methods available in the picklist are related to the feature type selected (in this case a Tract Polygon).
Step 11: In the Select Management Activity window, select:
- Activity = Boundary
- Type = Maintenance
- Method = Paint
Step 12: In the Select Management Activity window, click <OK> to close the Select Management Activity window. The “Activity Prescribed” field of the New Activity window updates to the selected Activity, Type, and Method.
Note: Depending on the Activity selected, there may or may not be a details grid with segment lengths populated.
Step 13: In the New Activity Window, click <OK>. The Verify Activity confirmation form opens.
Step 14: In the Verify Activity form, click <Yes> to save the Activity to the selected feature.
Step 15: Click <Close> to Close the Define Segments window.
